What Is the Water Cycle? (Explained Simply for Kids)

If you’ve ever wondered how to explain the water cycle without making your child’s eyes glaze over, here’s the simple version:

The water cycle process is how water moves all around our planet — from oceans and lakes to clouds, rain, and right back again. It repeats over and over, powered by the sun.

There are four main stages:

  1. Evaporation – The sun warms water and turns it into vapor.
  2. Condensation – That vapor cools and turns into clouds.
  3. Precipitation – Clouds get heavy and release water as rain, snow, or hail.
  4. Collection – Water gathers in lakes, rivers, and oceans before starting all over again.

That’s the same water dinosaurs drank, the same water you brush your teeth with, and the same water that’ll rain down tomorrow.
