What to Teach 3rd Graders: A Real Mom’s 3rd Grade Skills Checklist

Not even gonna lie…when I first started homeschooling Ava in 3rd grade, I kept searching stuff like “what should a 3rd grader know?” and somehow ended up more confused every single time.

Every list online felt so stiff and overwhelming. Like okayyyy… but what does this actually look like at home? On a random Tuesday? With snacks everywhere and a kid randomly doing cartwheels in the middle of math? LOL

So instead of trying to copy a giant school system checklist, I started paying attention to what Ava was actually learning, what was sticking, and what made her excited to come back to the table the next day.

And honestly? That changed everything.

So if you’re wondering what to teach 3rd graders, here’s our real-life checklist. Not perfect. Not Pinterest-mom perfection. Just what’s actually working in our homeschool right now.

Reading: Helping 3rd Graders Understand What They Read

Okay wait…this was one of the biggest shifts for us this year.

3rd grade reading stopped being just “read the words correctly” and became more about actually understanding the story.

We recently finished The Never Girls: In a Blink, and OMG Ava was SO into it. I specifically picked a fantasy book because I wanted her practicing context clues while also using her imagination.

And honestly? It worked so well.

We’d stop during chapters and I’d ask things like:

  • “What do you think is happening here?”
  • “Why do you think she said that?”
  • “What do you think is going to happen next?”

Those little conversations helped way more than making her answer robotic comprehension questions afterward.

What we’re focusing on in reading:

  • Using context clues
  • Retelling stories in her own words
  • Predicting what happens next
  • Talking about characters and settings
  • Learning new vocabulary naturally through books
  • Reading with expression and confidence

And not even gonna lie…sometimes her predictions are WILD haha. But I love seeing her think deeply about stories now instead of just rushing through pages.

Writing: Daily Paragraph Practice Has Helped SO Much

Writing has become one of those things we just practice naturally all the time now.

Almost every day, Ava writes a complete paragraph about random stuff. Literally random.

One day it’s about her favorite snack.
Another day it’s “what would happen if cats could talk.”
Another day she’s explaining why she thinks she should stay up later LOL.

But this is what actually worked 👇

Keeping writing low-pressure helped her build confidence way faster.

Instead of trying to force these giant perfect essays, we focus on:

  • Writing complete sentences
  • Staying on topic
  • Adding details
  • Using punctuation correctly
  • Reading her writing out loud to catch mistakes

And honestly? Reading it out loud has helped SO much. She catches missing words almost immediately now.

Some days she complains.
Some days she writes way more than I expected.

That’s homeschool life haha.

What to Teach 3rd Graders

Math: What Do You Learn in 3rd Grade Math?

Okay THIS is where I realized hands-on learning matters SO much.

Because ain’t no damn way Ava was going to sit there happily doing 50 dry math problems in silence. Absolutely not LOL.

One thing she actually loves doing is using play money. I’ll randomly tell her:

“Show me 5 different ways to make $100.”

And then she starts figuring it out herself using different bill combinations.

It helps her SEE numbers differently instead of just memorizing answers.

What we’re working on in math:

  • Addition and subtraction
  • Beginning multiplication and division
  • Place value
  • Fractions
  • Counting money
  • Telling time
  • Measurement
  • Word problems

And honestly, I think the best way to teach 3rd graders math is by making it feel real.

The second kids can connect math to actual life, it clicks so much faster.

Science: Keeping Curiosity Alive

I swear 3rd graders ask “why” every five seconds LOL.

So instead of making science super textbook-heavy, I’ve been trying to keep that curiosity alive as much as possible.

We’ve been learning about:

  • The water cycle
  • Weather
  • Life cycles
  • The solar system
  • Matter and energy basics

And honestly? Some of our best homeschool moments happen during science.

There’s just something about watching kids get genuinely fascinated by how the world works.

Like WHAAAATTTT do you mean caterpillars completely turn into butterflies?!

Kids eat this stuff up.

And I truly don’t think you need some giant expensive homeschool curriculum for 3rd grade to make science meaningful.

You really don’t.

Some printables, videos, books, conversations, and simple activities go a LONG way.

Social Studies: Learning About the World Around Her

Right now we’re keeping social studies super basic and foundational.

We started with maps, states, and early U.S. history because I wanted Ava to first understand where she fits into the world before diving deeper into history later on.

I have a giant world map hanging on the wall and we use it constantly.

I’ll randomly say:
“Point to Texas.”
“Can you find Canada?”
“Where’s Florida?”

And now she’ll randomly quiz ME back haha.

What we’re learning in social studies:

  • Continents and oceans
  • States and geography
  • Directions on a map
  • Very basic U.S. history
  • Communities and how they work

I saw this cute passport activity idea online and okay wait…that honestly sounds so fun for later because I already know she’d LOVE pretending to “travel” while learning geography.

What to Teach 3rd Graders

Life Skills: Honestly…This Stuff Matters Too

I know people focus so heavily on academics, but not even gonna lie…life skills are a huge part of our homeschool too.

Because learning responsibility matters.

Ava has been practicing:

  • Folding clothes
  • Taking clothes off hangers and rehanging them
  • Cleaning up after herself
  • Following directions
  • Staying focused on tasks

And listen…is everything folded perfectly? Absolutely not LOL.

But she’s learning independence, responsibility, and consistency little by little.

That matters too.yself: if she learns how to take care of her things and be kind, we’re doing just fine.

Electives: The Fun Stuff Counts TOO

This might honestly be Ava’s favorite part of homeschool right now.

She’s SUPER into:

  • Dancing
  • Basic gymnastics moves
  • Arts and crafts
  • Music

And honestly? I lean into it hard because kids learn so much through creativity and movement.

Some days she’s practicing handstands on the couch.
Some days the table is covered in glue sticks and construction paper scraps.

And you know what? That’s still learning.

Not every lesson has to happen sitting at a desk.

Free Printable: 3rd Grade Skills Checklist

Because my brain personally loves seeing things written down clearly, I made a free 3rd grade skills checklist with everything we’re focusing on this year.

It breaks subjects down into simple categories so you can easily track what your child is learning without feeling overwhelmed.

Honestly, it’s the kind of thing I wish I had when we first started 3rd grade.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve been stressing about what to teach 3rd graders, I just want you to know this:

You do NOT need to recreate public school at home.

You do not need color-coded perfection.
You do not need 8-hour school days.
You do not need the world’s fanciest homeschool curriculum.

You just need consistency, curiosity, and a willingness to meet your child where they are.

Some days are amazing.
Some days feel chaotic.
Some days your kid learns math while upside down on the couch.

Homeschooling is wild sometimes haha. But watching your child grow in confidence little by little?
Best feeling ever.
