The 4 Stages of a Butterfly’s Life Cycle

The butterfly’s journey is called metamorphosis, which means to change form. Here’s how it happens:

1. Egg

Every butterfly begins as a tiny egg, usually laid on the underside of a leaf. Inside, a baby caterpillar is forming and getting ready to hatch.

2. Caterpillar (Larva)

When the egg hatches, a small caterpillar appears — and it’s hungry! The caterpillar spends its days eating leaves, growing quickly, and shedding its skin several times.

3. Chrysalis (Pupa)

Once it’s fully grown, the caterpillar hangs upside down and forms a chrysalis. It may look still, but inside, the caterpillar’s body is transforming into a butterfly.

4. Butterfly (Adult)

When the butterfly emerges, its wings are soft and crinkled. It rests while they dry in the sunshine, then takes off to drink nectar and lay eggs to begin the cycle again.

From start to finish, the life cycle of a butterfly shows how incredible change can be. Every stage has a purpose.
